This year, the first election of the rector’s authorities after the entry into force of the Constitution for Science took place. At universities, rectors have been elected for the 2020-2024 term, and it is already known that this will be a term different than all others. Many women  – more than ever before in history – will be in charge of the university.

Changes in the rector’s authorities 2020-2024

This year’s election of the rector’s authorities began in January and was inaugurated by the University School of Physical Education in Wrocław. By the end of July, most of the new rectors were elected, and the election marathon will be officially closed by the Władysław Strzemiński Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź. Nevertheless, it is already known that the 2020-2024 term will be groundbreaking.

For the first time in history, more than 20 women will head the university. Additionally, in some institutions such a situation never happened before – e.g. at the Białystok University of Technology, where prof. Marta Kosior-Kazberuk became the first woman in this position, despite the 70-year history of the university. Interestingly, at this university there was an unprecedented situation for Polish universities of technology, because two women applied for the rector’s position.

There are more and more of similar situations, which proves that the position of women in the university world is beginning to change. We hope that the 2020-2024 term of office will start a new, good trend among the rector’s authorities.
