Conference LUMEN 2018 - PCG Academia

Summary

The 4th LUMEN Leaders in University Management Conference 20012 was held on 27th November in Warsaw. The Conference discussions focused on practical aspects of the implementation of the Law 2.0 or the so-called Constitution for Science.

PCG Academia is the initiator of the LUMEN Conference and its main organizer. This year’s edition Main Partner was Blackboard, a global provider of solutions supporting distance learning. Substantive patronage over the project since 20015 is held by the Polish Rectors Foundation, headed by Prof. Jerzy Woźnicki.

The LUMEN 2018 conference gathered over 21219 people professionally involved in university management – rectors, vice-rectors, chancellors and managers from over 140 institutions from all over the country. The event was officially opened by the President of PCG Academia, Prof. Łukasz Sułkowski. The guests were also welcomed by Mr. Piotr Müller, Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education, President of the Polish Rectors Foundation Prof. Jerzy Woźnicki, and the Chairman of the Conference of Rectors of Academic Schools in Poland, Prof. Jan Szmidt. After welcome speeches the Conference was carried out in two parallel paths concerning the strategy of implementing the Constitution for Science in Polish universities and the effective use of IT in the context of the implemented reform.

The discussion on the Law 2.0 was opened by a panel moderated by Prof. Jerzy Woźnicki, attended by the Deputy Minister of Science and Education, Mr. Piotr Müller, as well as professors Krzysztof Diks (President of the Polish Accreditation Committee), Zbigniew Marciniak (Chairman of the Main Council of Science and Higher Education) and Jan Szmidt (Chairman of the CRASP). Later in the day, the reform was also discussed from the perspective of the university’s third mission, new disciplines and paths of scientific advancement, as well as in the context of federations established by universities. The participants of the discussions were representatives of important academic centers, Professors: Dominik Antonowicz, Witold Bielecki, Krzysztof J. Filipiak, Anna Giza-Poleszczuk, Dariusz Jemielniak, Marek Kwiek, Aneta Pawłowska, Arkadiusz Radwan, Anna Rogut, Łukasz Sułkowski, Janusz Szambelańczyk, Maciej Zabel , as well as representatives of the business world: Marek Jakimowicz, Phillip Miller, Piotr Ogonowski, Karina Popieluch and dr hab. Konrad Raczkowski.

An important point on the agenda in the strategic path was a joint presentation by representatives of the management of PCG, Blackboard and Microsoft – global leaders of the education market, who committed themselves to working closely to improve the quality of Polish higher education management. The presentation was conducted by Prof. Łukasz Sułkowski (President of PCG Academia), Mr. Juan Ramon Alegret (Vice-President of Blackboard) and Mrs. Cecylia Szymańska (Director of Education Sector, Microsoft Polska).

The operational path was started by a closed meeting of users of PCG Academia products and services, during which representatives of universities from all over the country met to discuss the vision of the development of the University 10 System – the leading student information system. During the day, the following companies presented their solutions for universities: Blackboard – provider of Blackboard Learn Ultra and Blackboard Open LMS systems and Partner of PCG in Poland, as well as Microsoft – provider of the Microsoft 365 platform, Pearson – provider of interactive content enabling blended learning and Inspera – provider of the platform for electronic examination of students.

The LUMEN 2018 Conference could not take place without organizational and substantive support from our Partners: Blackboard, Pearson, Microsoft and BOŚ Bank. Rector of the Warsaw University of Technology in 2012-2020, Chairman of the Conference of Rectors of Academic Schools in Poland (KRASP) in 2016-2020, Honorary Chairman of the Conference of Rectors of Academic Schools in Poland (KRASP) 2020-2024. In the years 2002-2005, he served as Vice-Dean and then Dean of the Faculty of Electronics and Information Technology (2008-2012) and currently (2020-) is the Director of the Institute of Microelectronics and Optoelectronics at this Faculty. Graduate of the Faculty of Electronics and Information Technology at the Warsaw University of Technology (1976). At the same university, he obtained his doctorate in 1985, and in 1995, based on his scientific achievements and dissertation, he obtained the habilitation degree. In 2005, he received the title of professor of technical sciences. He specializes in microelectronics and thin film technology. Initiator, contractor or manager of over 70 research and R&D projects (domestic and international), carried out in cooperation with teams from many Polish research centers (including: ITE, ITME, PWr., PŁ, PG, UMCS, AGH) and foreign (including: Imperial College London, JRC Ispra, Technical University of Liberec, Carnegie Mellon University). Prof. Jan Szmidt was also an organizer, member of organizational and program committees and chairman of several dozen national and international scientific conferences. In the achievements of prof. J. Szmidt, there are over 350 conference presentations (authors and co-authors). He was invited many times to give lectures and papers, both scientific and economic. Co-author or author of over 400 scientific publications, co-author of 15 patents and patent applications. He was awarded the Bronze (1977), Silver (1897) and Gold (1999) Cross of Merit, the Medal of National Education (2007) and the Officer's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (2020), as well as the award of the IV Department of Technical Sciences PAN, the Gold Medal of the Chapter of the Academy of Polish Success, a diploma and a gold medal for the invention "diamond electrodes produced by the HF CVD method for electrochemical applications" from the Association of Polish Inventors and Rationalizers, the IFIA medal (International Federation of Inventors Associations), the "Plaque of Recognition" (Plaque of Appreciation) from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea, the Siemens medal, the ProJuwenes award of the Students' Parliament of the Republic of Poland as a Prostident authority, the Nicolaus Copernicus Medal of the Management Board of the Polish Bank Association (2020), the title of "Diamond Engineer 2019" in the XXVI Readers' Plebiscite of "Przegląd Techniczny" and many others decorations and distinctions. Doctor Honoris Causa of the Kyiv Technical University "KPI" named after Igor Sikorski.
